O’Sullivan bids to retain Irish Close Championship - 21st May 2004

Irish International, Mark O’Sullivan (Galway), will bid to retain his Golfsure sponsored, Irish Amateur Close Championship title at Donegal (Murvagh) Golf Club on June 12-16.

O’Sullivan, who captured his first major title when he beat David Carroll (Grange) in the final by one hole at Tramore Golf Club last year, heads a top field of entrants which includes fellow Internationals Noel Fox (Portmarnock), Michael McGeady (North West) Gareth Maybin (Ballyclare) and Brian McElhinney (North West) the reigning European Amateur Champion.

The course at Murvagh, lying as it does in Donegal Bay, on a peninsula that is not dissimilar to the Old Course at St. Andrews, occupies a most splendid site and will present a real challenge for the competitors.

Donegal Golf Club has most numerous Championships over the years, but this will be the first occasion for the Irish Close to held over its super links course.

Most recent winners of the title include John McGinn (2002) and Gavin McNeill (2001), while other past winners include Graeme McDowell (2000), Peter Lawrie (1996), Padraig Harrington (1995), Gary Murphy (1992), Darren Clarke (1990) and Paul McGinley (1989).
