The Scottish Golf Union (SGU) has become an incorporated limited liability company following reorganisation of the governing body of men’s amateur golf in Scotland. The move to incorporate was approved at an EGM held yesterday (Sunday 18 January).

The new company, Scottish Golf Union Limited (SGUL) is responsible for implementing the strategy which evolved in 2001 from a lengthy consultation process involving clubs and golfers all over Scotland.

The core objectives in this strategy are to grow the game; to develop talented players; to support member clubs; to work together with key golfing partners; to improve communication and marketing; and to generate further income and sponsorship to develop the game. At the root of all these objectives is the main goal to make the game accessible to everyone throughout the country.

The move to incorporate the SGU into a limited liability company has the key benefits of simplifying the structure, providing greater financial protection for affiliated clubs and clarifying the SGU’s legal status particularly with regard to VAT. The changes further serve to bring together the management of SGU and its operating company Scottish Golf Limited (SGL) in one corporate body.

The board of directors of the former SGL will make up the board of the new company. There will be sixteen shareholders, namely the existing SGU Area Associations, whose representatives will form an Executive Council occupying similar roles within the company as the old Executive Committee undertook with SGL.

This reorganisation follows the recent trend in other leading sports in Scotland. Incorporation marks a further stage in the modernisation of the SGU structure and demonstrates the Union’s commitment to take the game of golf forward in Scotland.

Chief Executive Officer, Hamish Grey said: “We are very confident that the incorporation of the SGU will enhance the governance of the game in this country and provide a suitable vehicle for future development in Scottish golf.
