Golfing in the Borders region? - stay at The County Hotel, Selkirk. - 26th Jun 2004

The County Hotel situated in the market square of the beautiful and historic border town of Selkirk, on the A7 road from Edinburgh to Carlisle, was built originally as a coaching inn on the site of the infamous "Bunch of Grapes" hostelry.

The hotel's past is steeped in history due mainly to the meetings of the "Forest Club" held in "Scott's Ha'", where members of the invited guests featured such names as Sir Walter Scott, The Duke of Wellington, Prince Leopold of the Belgians and Mungo Park to name but a few.

Today, however, the hotel's clients do not need to be so famous although the hotel's staff like to treat them that way. The rooms are tastefully furnished and benefit from tea and coffee making facilities, colour televisions, central heating and of course, en-suite facilities.

FACILITIES:

The County is renowned for it's warm and friendly atmosphere, no more so than in our Souter's Lounge, where one can relax in comfortable surroundings with walls decked with clan prints and sip the traditional ales or enjoy one of the Hotel's freshly prepared Bar Lunches or Suppers.

Due to the famous Scottish weather, there is also a laundry and drying room for the use of all our guests if required. There is also safe storage for golf clubs and shotguns available.

THE SURROUNDING AREA:

The surrounding area is an 'Aladdin's cave' of things to do.

Sporting facilites locally include -

Fishing: either on the Ettrick or Yarrow waters or on the beautiful Tweed.

Golf: the hotel is part of the 'Freedom of the Fairways' scheme where a different course can be played on each day for an all inclusive price (3 or 6 day passport available)

Riding and Trekking can be arranged locally as well as Clay Pigeon Shooting, Rambling and Mountain Biking.

Indeed, whatever your sport, we would be only too pleased to help arrange it for you.

For the less energetic there are no fewer than 9 historic houses and castles within 30 minutes of Selkirk, most of which are open from April through to October.
