HENRY HOPES FOR ANOTHER HISTORIC WIN - 14th Jul 2004
BP Scottish Boys Champion Scott Henry will head to the Scottish Boys Stroke Play Championship next week (20 - 22 July) at Machrihanish GC, hoping to rip up the record books - for the second time this year.
The Cardross ace rewrote history for the first time when he won the Scottish Boys title with a 12 and 11 victory over Dean Yeats (Newmachar) at Southerness.
A victory in the Boys Stroke Play would make him only the third player in the history of Scottish golf to win both the boys' match play and stroke play titles in the same year.
Only Sky Sports commentator Ewan Murray (1971) and Inverallochy's Steven Young (1994) have achieved a similar feat.
Seventeen year old Henry has dominated this season, finishing top in all three new SGU Junior Tour events to lead the Junior Ranking table. He also led Dumbartonshire to the BP Scottish Boys Area Team title, scoring an impressive 66 (-5) to secure the Niagara Cup - awarded to the player with the lowest individual score.
Henry's fellow boys' internationalists Paul O'Hara (Colville Park), David Addison (Kilmarnock Barassie), and Garry Wood (Crow Wood) are also in the field.
Daniel Torrance (Sunningdale), the son of former European Ryder Cup Captain Sam, will also contend for the coveted title. It is the first time young Torrance has played in the event, and he will be eager to impress in his maiden appearance.
There is guaranteed to be a new Scottish Boys Stroke Play Champion this year, with defending champion Lloyd Saltman not in the field. Saltman's ineligibility opens the door to a number of contenders for the crown.
It is the highest quality field ever to compete for the prestigious title. With the handicap ballot at 4.2, many talented golfers failed to make the grade. It is the lowest ballot recorded in the event's history, having dropped from 5.9 since the 1999 championship.
Over 200 entries were received by the SGU for this year's championship - the largest entry ever recorded in the event.
The field of 144 competitors will play 18 holes on Tuesday / Wednesday, with the top 40 and those ties for 40th place completing the final two rounds on Thursday.
