Clubs tee off in Grand Final of Scottish Club Handicap Championship. - 28th Sep 2004

Golf clubs from the length and breadth of the country will tee off in the final of the Belhaven Best Scottish Club Handicap Championship at the Macdonald Cardrona Hotel, Golf & Country Club this week (Friday 1 October).

A total of sixty clubs from all over Scotland will take part at Cardrona having qualified in one of four regional finals held at Dunbar, Crow Wood, Renfrew and Alyth throughout August.

Around eighty clubs played in each of the four regional finals, with the top 15 from each qualifying for the Grand Final at Cardrona, Peebles.

At Dunbar, Bruntsfield Links took the honours with a score of 60. Brucefields Golf Club won the regional final at Crow Wood with a 64, while Haggs Castle secured first place at Renfrew also with a score of 64, and home club Alyth booked their place in the final with a 68.

The Belhaven Best Scottish Club Handicap Championship was introduced in 2001 to provide a national championship for all club golfers and not just the elite player.

More than 24,000 golfers from all over Scotland have taken part in this year's Belhaven Best Scottish Club Handicap Championship.

In excess of 300 golf clubs have entered the championship this year, compared to 180 in the inaugural event in 2001, and 270 who competed in last year's event. Although the average number of competitors taking part in the club qualifiers is around 65, some have had over 230 entries to the event.

The format for the championship is an 18-hole medal team competition with a maximum handicap of 28 allowed. Each team consists of two players from the club and the best net score by any one of the two players at each hole will be added to form an aggregate.
