LOTHIANS FACE TOP TABLE CLASH IN SCOTTISH AREA TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP - 14th Sep 2004
Lothians face a tough test in the third round of the Scottish Area Team Championship this weekend (Sunday 19 September).
The defending champions will take on table toppers Renfrewshire in a tense decider to determine which side will progress to the semi finals. Both teams have won their two first matches, but the Renfrewshire side have advantage, topping the table with a greater points difference.
Lothians won their tenth Area Team title last year, defeating Clackmannanshire 5 - 4 in the final at Alloa.
Elsewhere, it is all to play for in Group A, with all four teams still in a position to make the semi finals. Glasgow will face North in a bid to record their third Area Team victory, whilst Fife and Borders will battle it out, hoping to claim their maiden title in the event.
Double champions Perth and Kinross, who won back-to-back titles in 2001-02 will face Ayrshire in the third round. Trailing Group B leaders North East by 3 points, they will be hoping to record a win over their opponents and hope the other result goes in their favour.
The Scottish Area Team Championships are held in high esteem amongst SGU Areas and with everything still to play for, the third round is sure to produce some fiercely contested matches.
The first three rounds of the Championship are played in a league format with the Areas drawn into four groups of four. The winners of each group then go forward to the semi final stage, before the final two battle it out for the title. In this year's draw, the winner of Group D will face the team that top Group B, whilst the winners of Group A will play the Group C victors.
This year, the final stages will be played at Cardross Golf Club (2 - 3 October) for the second time in the event's history. Renfrewshire were crowned champions in 1982 - the last time the event was played at Cardross.
The format is foursomes in the morning and singles in the afternoon.
