Defending Champ Henry Gears Up For BP Double - 4th Apr 2005
Cardross youngster Scott Henry will this week aim to complete a Championship double when he tees it up at the BP Scottish Boys Championship at Murcar Golf Club (4 – 9 April).
Henry won last year’s Championship in style, defeating Dean Yeats (Newmacher) by a record 12&11 margin, before adding the Scottish Boys Stroke Play Championship last July at Macrihanish. The 18-year old capped a memorable year by claiming the inaugural SGU Junior Tour ranking title and leading Dumbartonshire to the BP Scottish Area Team Championship.
This will be Henry’s last year of Boys’ competition but he has already performed well on the senior stage, lining up in the SGU team in the Bunkered Matchplay Challenge and performing well to reach the fifth round in last year’s Scottish Amateur Championship. He begins his defence today, taking on Danny Thorburn (Turnhouse) in the first round.
Leading the challengers will be Jordan Findlay, the reigning British Boys Champion. The Fraserburgh ace has started the season well, finishing tied first in the opening Junior Tour event at Kingsbarns at the weekend. Findlay’s campaign gets underway on Tuesday, when he faces Dean Dolan (Shotts).
Daniel Torrance – son of former Ryder Cup captain Sam – plays in his third Scottish Boys Championship, and following last year’s call up to the Scotland Boys Team, Torrance will be looking to improve on his fourth round exit in 2004. The Sunningdale based youngster begins his Championship against Michael Brand (Tain).
The BP Scottish Boys Match Play Championship is the first major event of the domestic season and one of the Scottish Golf Union’s flagship events. Past champions include European Tour players Andrew Coltart and Steven O’Hara, winner of the Championship the last time the event was held at Murcar.
The 2005 event is once again sponsored by BP, one of the SGU’s longest serving partners, in the final year of a five year agreement. Discussions are well underway to extend BP’s sponsorship, which also includes the Boys Stroke Play Championship and Boys Area Team Championship.
This year’s Championship has once again attracted a top quality field of the country’s leading 256 boys, with the handicap ballot set almost a stroke lower than previous years at 5.8.
The format is match play with the first game teeing off at 6.45am on Monday 4th April. The quarter-finals and semi-finals take place on Friday 8th April with a 36-hole final on Saturday 9th April. This year’s event will be the second time Murcar has played host, the last time being in 1998 when Steven O’Hara beat David Sutton in the Final.
