LOTHIANS NAME STRONG SIDE FOR DEFENCE OF AREA TITLE - 1st Oct 2004
Lothians will field a strong team in a bid to successfully defend their Scottish Area Team Championship title at Cardross this weekend (2-3 October).
Walker Cup squad member Lloyd Saltman (Craigielaw) will head the Lothians charge. The 19 year old former Scottish Boys Stroke Play Champion, helped Scotland to international glory in the European Youths Team Championships in Ireland, and made his senior debut at the Home Internationals earlier this month.
Scottish Stroke Play bronze medallist John Gallagher (Swanston) will also line up for Lothians, along with former Scottish Boys Champion Lee Harper (Musselburgh) and winner of this year's Cameron Corbett Vase James McGhee (Duddingston).
Four members of last year's victorious Lothians team will once again line up for their Area - Gallagher, Saltman, Steven Armstrong (Turnhouse) and Keith Nicholson (Haddington).
Lothians face a tough semi final clash against Glasgow as they began their campaign for double glory and an eleventh title win since the event was inaugurated in 1977.
The other semi final pitches South against North East, as the team from the South battle to win their first title in the event's history.
All four teams finished top of their respective groups following three rounds of competition played in a league format throughout the season.
This year, the final stages will be played at Cardross for the second time in the event's history. Renfrewshire were crowned champions in 1982 - the last time the event was played at Cardross.
The format is foursomes in the morning and singles in the afternoon.
