HENRY WINS JUNIOR GOLF RANKING - 9th Aug 2004
Scott Henry has added yet another title to his collection this year - winning the Junior Golf Ranking after a season of outstanding golf.
The 17 year old from Cardross tops the SGU Junior Tour Ranking Table with an average score against the CSS of 0.07 - ahead of Scottish Amateur Championship finalist Paul O'Hara (Colville Park).
Henry began the season brightly, finishing joint top at the first Junior Tour event at Kingsbarns. His form was carried into the BP Scottish Boys Championship at Southerness, where he defeated Dean Yeats (Newmachar) to lift the title with a record breaking win of 12 and 11.
At Junior Tour Event two, the Cardross ace once again finished top in a five-way tie for first place to remain at the head of the Junior Ranking table. A third successive victory in Event three at Craigielaw increased his lead at the top.
Last month Henry clinched the Scottish Boys Stroke Play title at Machrihanish to become only the third player ever to win the Match Play and Stroke Play crowns in the same year, and guaranteeing him the first ever Junior Golf Ranking title.
Paul O'Hara, who finished just behind Henry in the Boys Stroke Play secured second place in the table, with David Addison (Kilmarnock Barassie) in third.
The Scottish Golf Union introduced the Junior Tour this year to provide the countries top young golfers with top-level competitive play.
The 2004 Tour comprised of six events including the Scottish Boys Stroke Play, Scottish Youths Stroke Play and Scottish Under 16 Championships, along with three new events.
Staged around existing National and Area fixtures in the calendar, the primary focus of the new events was to get early season competition at national level, giving coaching staff and selectors an opportunity to assess players and their development over challenging courses.
The Junior Tour comprises a stroke average award, based on the same system used for the men's Scottish Golf Ranking competition. This ensures that no one player is penalised for not playing in all of the events. However, the system recognises players who perform consistently well in the competitions they do play in.
sportscotland, through the national junior golf programme, branded as 'clubgolf', committed £6,000 to the running of the 2004 Tour.
