DALMAHOY TO HOST BELHAVEN FINAL - 3rd May 2005
The newly revamped East Course at the Marriot Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club in Edinburgh has been chosen to host the final of this year’s Belhaven Best Scottish Club Handicap Championship final on Friday October 7th, run by the Scottish Golf Union.
The event is the only recognised national championship open to all club golfers in Scotland. The tournament attracted more than 22,000 players from 307 clubs last year, a figure which has increased by 45% since its launch five years ago. Braehead Golf Club – represented by Michael Brook and Kevin Hughes – were the winners in 2004, fending off competition from fifty nine other clubs in the grand final.
Local qualifying events have already started at clubs across the country, with players aiming to represent their clubs in the four regional finals. These take place in the summer at Dunbar (5th August), Dunblane (12th August), Renfrew (19th August) and Alyth (22nd August), with the top fifteen clubs in each regional final earning a place at the grand final.
The East Course at Dalmahoy has been given a new look this year with the completion of a £1m redevelopment programme. From the championship tees, the course now measures 7475 yards, making it the longest course in Scotland. The famous signature sixteenth hole has become the new final hole, with two brand new holes added and many existing holes altered. Dalmahoy officially reopens on the 2nd May, when the new layout will be in play for the first time.
Chris Anderson, Marketing Manager at Belhaven Brewery, said:
“This is now our fifth year of sponsorship with the Scottish Golf Union and we are delighted to see the growth in the number of players and clubs competing in what is Scotland’s biggest handicap based championship.”
“The Belhaven Best brand is synonymous with golf in Scotland. Its popularity in Scotland’s golf clubs and with golfers of all calibres has helped it become the most favoured draught ale brand in Scotland. Sponsorship of this event allows us to say thank you to the clubs and players alike who have loyally supported Belhaven Best since its launch in the early 90’s.”
With no entry fee, the event is open to all SGU affiliated clubs. Members must be aged 18 or over and hold an official CONGU handicap. The leading two players from each club will qualify for the regional finals. Club secretaries should contact the SGU events team on 01382 549504 to register their club to take part.
