ENGLAND UNDER-16s TAKE VICTORY IN IMPRESSIVE WIN OVER SCOTS - 6th Oct 2005
England’s under-16s defended their unbeaten record in spectacular form when they overcame Scotland for the ninth time in succession.
England’s players were not defeated in either their foursomes or singles in achieving the 12 ½ - 2 ½ win, with all of Scotland’s points coming from drawn matches alone.
Although having the advantage of being on home soil at Gullane, the combined handicap of the Scotland team at 17, was completely overshadowed by the England combined handicap of +1 with all of the young English players showing outstanding promise.
Two England players, Ashley Chesters and Jack Sant, scored maximum points and were the only England pairing to win their foursomes tie. Chesters is the current Midland boys champion and Sant is also a successful Midland player who represented Warwickshire in the Boys County Finals earlier this year.
The England win was not without its worries as all of the foursomes struggled at the 17th, losing the hole each time. On three occasions they had to come back from one point down and win the 18th to avoid losing their ties.
But despite this and the high winds which made play difficult, the England players superior technique and team morale was reflected in the final result and there is clearly first class potential in the younger ranks of England players to look forward to.
The full England team is:
Tim Chatfield (Wentworth)
Ashley Chesters (Hawkstone Park)
Tommy Fleetwood (Formby Hall)
Jack Hiluta (Chelmsford)
Andrew Johnston (North Middlesex)
Tom Lewis (Mid Herts)
Adam Myers (Northants County)
Darren Renwick (Worthing)
Jack Sant (Ladbrook Park)
Henry Smart (Walton Heath)
