Teenage Trio set to compete in Sweden - 18th May 2006
Luke Joy, Nicholas McCarthy and Dale Whitnell, who all finished in the top ten in the recent Peter McEvoy Trophy, have been selected to represent the English Golf Union in the Skandia Junior Open in Sweden at the end of this month.
It will the first taste of overseas action with the EGU for all three and the championship, which also has a girls competition and is open to players born between 1985 and 1993, is being played at the Boras Golf Club, near Gothenburg on 26th - 28th May.
Whitnell, 17, from the Forrester Park club near Maldon in Essex, finished joint second in the McEvoy and was the Essex Boys champion in 2004. Last year he finished runner-up in the county event and he has also seen considerable success in the Faldo Series.
McCarthy, 18, from the Moortown club in Leeds, was sixth in the McEvoy at Copt Heath, five strokes behind the winner, and was a member of Yorkshire’s victorious team in last year’s Boys County Championships at Little Aston.
Joy, from the Broadstone club in Dorset, joint ninth in the McEvoy after a closing 69, won the South of England Boys Championship last year and will be hoping for a happy return as he will celebrate his 18th birthday the day prior to the championship.
The Skandia Junior Open is a 54-hole tournament with a cut after two rounds, the leading 48 players and ties going on to contest the final round. Back to top
