SCOTS TO THE FORE FOR SCOTTISH STROKE PLAY - 9th Jun 2005
Intense Scottish rivalry will be to the fore as the Scottish Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship gets underway at Royal Aberdeen this week (10 - 12 June).
Two favourites for the title, defending champion Richie Ramsay, playing on his home course, and Lloyd Saltman who has already claimed the Brabazon Trophy and the St Andrews Links Trophy this year as well as a semi-final berth in last week's British Amateur Championship, will be able to keep a close eye on each other having been drawn to play the first two rounds together.
With newly crowned Amateur Champion Brian McElhinney choosing to stay at home and defend his Irish Amateur crown, a Scottish victory could well be on the cards. All the country’s top names are in the field, including John Gallagher, runner-up to McElhinney last week at Royal Birkdale, who tees up alongside British Boys Amateur Champion, Jordan Findlay.
Jamie McLeary, Glenn Campbell, Eric Ramsay, Andrew McArthur, Stuart Wilson, Bryan Fotheringham and Craig Watson are also in the starting line-up, as is reigning Scottish Amateur Champion, George Murray who will celebrate his 22nd birthday as the tournament gets underway on Friday.
One of the most intriguing first round pairings is undoubtedly Scott Henry, Scottish Boys Champion for the last two years, drawn along side Ireland’s 16 year old Rory McIlroy who is not only the youngest player in the field but also one of the lowest handicaps at +3.4. The distinction of being the lowest handicap goes to Hoyt McGarity of the USA who plays off +4.3.
The tournament is the Scottish Golf Union’s flagship amateur Stroke Play event and with 16 countries represented the truly international field is one of the highest quality ever assembled in Scotland.
The 144 competitors will play two rounds on Friday and Saturday, with the top 40 and those tied for 40th place completing the final 36 holes for the title on Sunday. Previous winners of this tournament include Colin Montgomerie, Andrew Coltart, Stephen Gallacher and Alastair Forsythe.
A press office will be in operation at Royal Aberdeen over the three days of the event
