SCOTS HEAD STATESIDE - 17th Feb 2005
Six of Scotland’s most talented amateur golfers will head to America this week to compete against the world’s best in the Jones Cup (18 - 20 February).
The event played at Sea Island, Georgia - the scene of the momentous 2001 Walker Cup - boasts a world class field which includes all of America’s 2005 Walker Cup squad.
Double boys champion Scott Henry was drafted into Scotland’s Senior Squad last season after a year of domination in Scottish boys’ golf. He will travel to America with Andrew McArthur (Windyhill), Scottish Amateur Champion George Murray (Earlsferry Thistle), Scottish Stroke Play Champion Richie Ramsay (Royal Aberdeen) and Lloyd Saltman (Craigielaw). The group will face some of the world’s finest amateur golfers in the event.
Amateur Champion Stuart Wilson will meet the squad in America, having flown there four days early to play Augusta National in preparation for The Masters in April.
It is only the third time the Jones Cup has been held. Scottish players competed in the inaugural event in 2001, prior to the Walker Cup as part of the GB&I squad. Andrew McArthur and Stuart Wilson competed in 2003, when America’s Gregg Jones took the title.
McArthur, Murray, Ramsay, Saltman and Wilson have all been named as part of the GB&I squad for the Walker Cup. Selectors will choose 10 players from this squad to face America in August (13 -14) at Chicago.
The Jones Cup will provide the Scots with an opportunity to line up against some of the Americans they may play against in the Walker Cup. With leading golf nations from around the world sending players to the event, it will also give them stern early competition on an international stage ahead of this year’s European Team Championships.
The format of the Jones Cup is an individual stroke play event, with each competitor playing 54 holes.
