HATRICK CHALLENGE FOR LOTHIANS - 12th May 2005
Lothians will face Fife this weekend at Prestonfield (Sunday 15 May) as they attempt to clinch a hatrick of Scottish Area Team Championship titles.
The Championship now in its 29th year has witnessed the Lothian’s team dominate with a record eleven title victories and three successful title defences. However the one goal that eludes all competing teams is that of three consecutive title wins.
Fife, semi-finalists in 2001, will be doing their utmost to halt Lothian’s winning streak as they attempt to win the Championship for the first time. A similar challenge will await the Lothian’s when they play the South (semi-finalists in the last two years) in their second round match while their neighbours Borders complete the league matches in Group C.
In Group B, North East, runners-up in 2004, begin their attempt to go one better when they face Clackmannanshire on home soil at Newburgh on Ythan. Angus will also be hoping to take advantage of a home tie as they take on the 1989 and 1998 champions, Lanarkshire, at Edzell.
Perth & Kinross, the only team outwith Lothian’s to successfully defend the Area title (2000/01), commence their first round match in Group D against two time champions, Renfrewshire at Alyth. While the other Group D match sees Ayrshire travel to Rothesay to take on Argyll & Bute.
Group A, the only league without a team looking for their maiden Area title, sees Stirlingshire host the North at Glenbervie and Dumbartonshire versus Glasgow at Windyhill.
The Scottish Area Team Championships are held in high esteem amongst the sixteen Area teams and are sure to provide some fiercely contested matches.
The first three rounds of the Championship are played in a league format with the Areas drawn into four groups of four. The winners of each of the four groups then go forward to the semi final stage, before the final two battle it out for the title.
This year, the final stages will be played at Bathgate Golf Club (1 – 2 October) for the first time in the events’ history.
The format is foursomes in the morning and singles in the afternoon.
