MURRAY CLOSES ON MCLEARY AFTER SCOTTISH AMATEUR WIN - 4th Aug 2004
Newly crowned Scottish Amateur Champion George Murray has rocketed into second position of the Scottish Golf Union Order of Merit after his win at Gullane.
Murray (Earlsferry Thistle) defeated Colville Park's Paul O'Hara by 1 hole in the 36 hole final of the Scottish Amateur last week. Youngster O'Hara was four up with ten holes remaining, but 21-year-old Murray fought back to win on the final hole.
His performance at Gullane sees him move into second position in the Scottish Golf Union Order of Merit table. He has leapfrogged from sixth and closed the gap on frontrunner Jamie McLeary, however with the Leven player's quarterfinal placing at the Scottish Amateur, the margin at the top still remains at nearly 200 points.
Andrew McArthur, who reached the latter stages of the Scottish Amateur for the third successive year, moves into third in the order of merit table. The 25-year-old, who lifted the title in 2002, was defeated by O'Hara in the semi final, and now trails Murray by just over 30 points.
Scottish Amateur finalist Paul O'Hara moves into the top fifteen for the first time on 177.50, with semi finalist Graeme Brown (Royal Montrose) moving from 10th to eighth on 265.00 points.
