Celebrate The Open Championship at The British Golf Museum - 12th Oct 2005

The British Golf Museum is celebrating the 145th anniversary of the first Open Championship.

Monday 17th October sees the anniversary of the first Open Championship, which was played at Prestwick in 1860. To mark the event we are welcoming visitors to the museum for free on Saturday 15th, Sunday 16th and Monday 17th October, where they can see the replica Challenge Belt and the replica Claret Jug. The museum is packed full of exciting exhibitions, displays and interactives, including many about the history of The Open Championship over the last 145 years. These include the first Open medal, given to Tommy Morris in 1872, the five Open medals won by J.H. Taylor, the five Open medals won by James Braid and our exciting exhibition on The Open Championship in St Andrews 1946-2005, where you can get nearly as close to the Claret Jug as Tiger Woods. History comes to life as visitors can watch highlights of every Open Championship since 1926.

See how The Open has grown from that first small competition when only eight players entered and Willie Park senior won with a score of 174 over 36 holes.

Come along to the museum for the day and learn about the history of the championships and try putting with replica clubs and balls from the last 175 years. This will make the perfect break from playing golf .
