Truro defend Junior Champions Club at Woodhall Spa - 17th Oct 2006

The youngsters from Truro Golf Club in Cornwall will hope to make a successful defence of the title when the EGU Junior Champion Club tournament takes place over the Bracken Course at Woodhall Spa on the weekend of 21st and 22nd October.

Altogether, 33 counties will be represented at Woodhall Spa, the EGU’s headquarters in Lincolnshire, and some teams contain players who have already attained considerable success despite their tender years.

Truro, the only previous winners competing, became the first Cornish club to lift the title when they compiled 149 Stableford points at Woodhall Spa a year ago, finishing one point ahead of Basildon from Essex.

The Essex representatives this time will be Crondon Park from Stock, making their debut in the championship as are many of the competing clubs.

Hampshire representatives, Rowlands Castle, could be contenders as their three-strong team includes Darren Wright, winner of the Carris Trophy at Sherwood Forest back in July.

Ludlow from Shropshire and Herefordshire are also likely to mount a strong challenge as they include Sam Baker, Oliver Farr, and Tom Lowery, all members of the county’s boys team that finished third in the Boys County Finals at Pannal.

Farr is the county’s boy champion, winner of the Eden Trophy at St Andrews this year and the individual winner in the boys and men’s regional qualifying while Lowery is a Welsh under 16 cap.

Another contender could be Rochester and Cobham from Kent whose line-up includes Matt Haines, runner-up in the Kent Junior Championship who has played in the county first team, and Sam Shearer, another county player.

Yorkshire representatives West Bowling may attract some attention as their team includes Oliver Fisher - not the England international and Walker Cup player but his namesake.
This will be the fifth playing of this junior event which is growing in popularity and which attracts a stronger field each year.

The competition is also open to girls but only one team, Wolstanton from Staffordshire, has one in their line-up in Bronwyn Davies.

The format is Stableford scoring over 36 holes, the best two cards to count each day, while the champion club is decided on the best aggregate.
