SPANISH RUNNER-UP CHAUDHURI GIVEN TRIP TO PERU - 5th Apr 2005
Neil Chaudhuri, runner-up in the recent Spanish Amateur Championship, and boy international Ben Evans have been selected to represent the English Golf Union in the Peruvian International Teams Championship at Lima Golf Club on 13th - 16th April.
Chaudhuri, 20, from The Leicestershire Golf Club, qualified ninth for the Spanish Amateur held at El Saler in Valencia then battled his way through the match play stage to meet Dutchman Joost Luiten in the 36-hole final only to lose 3 and 2.
"I was disappointed to lose in the final but pleased to have done this well so early in the season," said Chaudhuri. "If I could have holed more putts it might have been a different story but I’m glad I did well to justify my selection for Peru. I am thrilled to be going to Peru as I’ve never been to South America before. So I’m really looking forward to the trip and to be playing alongside Ben, who’s a terrific player."
Evans, 18 from the Rye club in Sussex, has been part of the England junior scene since he finished runner-up in the Reid Trophy, the English Under 14 Championship, at Longcliffe in 2000. He was capped at under 16 level before making his full boys debut in the winning England team at the Boys Home Internationals in Wales in 2003. He was also a member of the victorious England teams that won the European Boys Team Championship and the Boys Home Internationals last year.
Evans has already had an excellent start to his season by winning the Faldo Series International Final in Hong Kong by an outstanding 10 shots over 36 holes. Evans has also represented the EGU in the Westfriese Junior Masters in Holland and, like Chaudhuri, is a current member of the England B Squad.
This is the first time the EGU has sent players to this event. The format for the tournament is 72 holes of stroke play, with both players’ scores counting over all four rounds for the team event, the Manuel Prado Cup, while there is an individual competition for the Carlos Raffo Cup.
