Elite Squad Members Named in St. Andrews Trophy Team - 16th Aug 2004

Five members of the England Elite Squad have been named in the nine-man St. Andrews Trophy Team to represent Great Britain and Ireland in the biennial match against the Continent of Europe.

Gary Wolstenholme (Kilworth Springs) is the only Elite Squad member to have previously played in the fixture, having been selected in 1992,1994,1996,1998, 2000 and 2002.

Wolstenholme will be joined by fellow Elite Squad members Lee Corfield (Burnham & Berrow), winner of the West of England Open Stroke play Championship 2004, James Heath (Coombe Wood), the holder of the Lytham Trophy and current English Amateur Champion, Sam Osborne (Wentworth), winner of the Berkshire Trophy and Matthew Richardson (The Buckinghamshire), this years Brabazon Trophy winner.

The English players will be joined by Andrew McArthur, Jamie McLeary and Amateur Champion Stuart Wilson from Scotland along with Welshman Nigel Edwards.

The match, which will take place at Nairn Golf Club in Scotland on 27th - 28th August 2004, consists of four foursomes and eight singles on each of the two days.

Great Britain & Ireland have won nine out of the last ten encounters, losing in 1998 at Villa d’Este in Italy.

EGU Performance Director, Nigel Furniss commented, “We are delighted that five of the Elite Squad have been named in the nine-man team which shows the strength of English golf in the British Isles”

The England Elite squad forms part of the English Golf Union’s highly successful World Class Performance Programme supported by the Sport England Lottery Fund.
