English Amateurs Waring and Coupland qualify for Carnoustie - 16th Jul 2007
England’s Elite Squad member Paul Waring has qualified to play in next weeks Open Championship at Carnoustie.
Just days after competing in the European Men’s Team Championships, Waring from Bromborough carded rounds of 66 and 69 at Monifieth, a total of 7 under par, which was good enough to secure second place.
The top three places at Monifieth, one of the four final Open qulaifying venues, all went to amateurs. Waring was just one shot behind 21-year-old David Coupland from Boston, Lincolnshire with Llewellyn Matthews from Wales, taking up the third qualifying position.
These three will join exempt amateurs Anders Hultman (United States IFQ), Francesco Molinari (Europe IFQ), Drew Weaver (British Amateur Champion), Richie Ramsay (United States Amateur Champion) and Rory McIlroy (European Amateur Champion) in the race for the Silver Medal.
England’s Under 21 Squad member Adam Hodkinson unfortunately lost out in a play off for the final spot at Downfield.
The last English amateur to win the Silver Medal was Justin Rose at Royal Birkdale in 1998.
