Talented threesome tackle Skandia event in Sweden - 11th May 2007
Billy Britton and Andrew Johnston, joint second in the recent Peter McEvoy Trophy, along with Henry Smart, have been selected to represent the English Golf Union in the Skandia Junior Open in Sweden at the end of this month.
It will the first taste of overseas action with the EGU for Kent-based Britton and the championship, which also has a girls competition, is being played at the Falkenburg Golf Club, near Gothenburg on 25th - 27th May.
Britton, 18, a Kent county player was challenging for the McEvoy title after a third round 67 left him one stroke off the lead. But a closing 73 saw him slip back on the same score as Johnston.
Johnston, 18, a former Middlesex under 14 champion, was capped by England at under 16 level in 2005 and moved up to boys representative golf in last year’s Boys Home Internationals in Scotland. He was a semi-finalist in the British Boys Championship at Royal Aberdeen last August and finished runner-up in the South East Boys Championship and the SE Boys Qualifying. In the McEvoy he again took a runners-up spot, finishing four strokes behind the winner, Matthew Haines.
Smart, 18, from Surrey, is a former under 16 cap who has come close to winning several junior titles including the McGregor Trophy, South East Junior Championship and the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters. He is a member of the England under 18 training squad.
The Skandia Junior Open is a 54-hole tournament with a cut after two rounds, the leading 48 players and ties going on to contest the final round.
England squad: Billy Britton (Pedham Place), Henry Smart (Walton Heath), Andrew Johnston (North Middlesex). Reserve: Eamonn ‘Stiggy’ Hodgson (Sunningdale)
