ENGLAND TAKE SILVER IN ARGENTINA - 8th Dec 2004
EGU Elite Squad members Matthew Richardson (The Buckinghamshire) and Lee Corfield (Burnham & Berrow) finished in second place in the Juan Carlos Tailhade Cup in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Sunday 5th December. England’s four round aggregate score of 574 tied them with Australia and was 4 strokes behind home winners Argentina.
European Champion Richardson’s individual score of 283 with rounds of 75-68-70-70 gave him joint 4th place and teammate Corfield came tied 11th on 291 with scores of 76-71-74-70.
Although the pair were 5 shots under England’s winning score last year they suffered a slow start in the 1st round with Richardson returning 75 and Corfield 76. Competition was fierce with teams competing in the event from around the globe including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Finland, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Scotland, Spain, South Africa, Sweden, Uruguay and Wales.
EGU Performance Director Nigel Furniss commented, “Matthew and Lee delivered a solid performance and deservedly took the silver medal. Although I know they will be disappointed as England has a good record in this event having won it in three out of the four previous years.”
Both players now look forward to competing in the Argentine Open in Buenos Aires, which begins on Thursday 9th December.
Matthew and Lee are both members of the EGU’s World Class Performance Programme Elite Squad. On their return from Argentina their focus will switch to the Elite Squad’s warm weather training programme, which will be taking place in South Africa early in the New Year in preparation for the 2005 season. The squad leave England on 10th January.
