McElhinney heads Irish team for European Championship - 9th Jun 2005
Brian McElhinney (North West), winner of the British Amateur Championship at Royal Birkdale last weekend, and who defends the Irish Amateur Close Championship commencing at Westport Golf Club on Saturday, heads Ireland’s team for the European Team Championship which will be played over the Hillside course in Southport on 28th June - 2nd July.
Jim Carvill (Warrenpoint), recently reinstated to the amateur ranks after a spell in the professional ranks, and winner of last weekend’s East of Ireland Championship at Co Louth Golf Club, is also included in the six-man team and also comprises Darren Crowe (Dunmurry), Michael McGeady (North West), Rory McIlroy (Holywood) and Sean McTernan (Co. Sligo).
Richard Kilpatrick (Banbridge) is the non-travelling reserve while Team Captain is Mark Gannon.
The Youths team selected to represent Ireland in the annual match against Scotland at Portumna Golf Club on Wednesday 22nd June is: Keith Crowley (Lee Valley), Nicholas Grant (Clandeboye), Rory McIlroy (Holywood), Cian McNamara (Limerick), Aaron O’Callaghan (Douglas) and Gareth Shaw (Lurgan). Michael Burns is the non-playing Team Captain.
