Introducing Flintshire. - 17th Jan 2003

Flintshire covers an area more commonly known as the North Wales Borderlands, because of their close proximity to the border with England and Roman towns like Chester.

The town of Flint from which it takes its name dates back to 1278 and not surprisingly, it has a castle built there by Edward I. Today it's a ruin but still worth looking round. Friday is a good day to go and catch the open-air market, a feature of the town since the days of Edward I.

The other main town in this area is Mold. It might have an unattractive name but it's a pretty place, with colourful markets and a location near the Clwydian Range of mountains.

Culture vultures will also love the Clwyd Theatr Cymru, which is based here and has an international reputation.

Just three miles away is Loggerheads - now a country park - or travel along the long and winding roads to Moel Fammau, at 1,820 feet it's the highest peak in the Clwydian Range with a viewing point at the top which has views over six counties.

This part of the world is also known around the world for the rich, stirring sound of Male Voice Choirs. And if you want to hear them close up many are happy to allow visitors along to sit in on their weekly practice sessions.
