England Seniors Win Double European Glory - 14th Jun 2005
The England Seniors team had two celebrations last week when Roy Smethurst took the top individual prize at the European Seniors Championship and the top three England players won team honours in the Nations Tournament held in Chantilly, France from 8th – 9th June.
England took team glory with a final score of 298, six shots ahead of Ireland. Roy Smethurst’s individual winning total of 148 was accomplished with a first round of 76 and second round of 72.
Smethurst, 62, who plays at Crewe Golf Club, is undoubtedly the most successful player in English senior golf and was already in high spirits as he had recently won the English Seniors Championship for the fourth time and was also British Senior Champion in 2003.
However the team victory came as a combined effort and his two colleagues, Howard Moxon and Gordon Broster, played some excellent golf to secure a double celebration. They were no doubt advantaged, as they are all members of the England team who currently hold the Seniors Home Internationals title secured in September 2004.
Moxon is the 2004 Kent Seniors Champion from Royal Cinque Ports and finished runner-up to Smethurst for the English title back in the same year. Broster, from the Padbrook Park Golf Club near Exeter, was the South West Seniors Champion in 2000 and has also represented the UK Seniors against South Africa and Botswana.
