SIX WELSHMEN NAMED IN GB & I SQUAD - 3rd Mar 2004
The Great Britain & Ireland Selectors have named six Welshmen in their squad of 24 in preparation for the defence of the Walker Cup next year. Rhys Davies, Nigel Edwards and David Price all members of the 2003 squad have been joined by Alex Smith (Pyle & Kenfig), Craig Smith (St Mellons) and Gareth Wright (West Linton).
A party of 12 players will visit Chicago Golf Club in August this year as preparation for the Walker Cup match to be held there on 13th and 14th August 2005.
This is the first time such a reconnaissance trip has been undertaken and represents a logical development in the eyes of Walker Cup Captain Garth McGimpsey. "Having won the last three matches in a row we must guard against feeling we are doing all the right things in our advance preparation. We know that the U.S. will be hugely motivated to stop our winning run, particularly on home soil, and we must continue to prepare in an increasingly comprehensive manner."
A squad of 24 players has been chosen as the first stage of the process of selecting the St Andrews Trophy Team to play the Continent of Europe on 27th & 28th August 2004 at Nairn. This team of 9 players will be selected at the beginning of August.
Chairman of Selectors, Peter McEvoy, agreed with Garth McGimpsey, "We have to move forward and target victories in the St Andrews Trophy this year and the Walker Cup in 2005. All players have busy seasons but fortunately most are well acquainted with Nairn after the European Championships that were played there last year. Rather than take the squad to Nairn we feel the best use of the time available is to visit Chicago so that players can see the challenges of the course and experience the climate."
Squad members:
Darren Crowe (Dunmurry), Rhys Davies (Royal Porthcawl), Nigel Edwards (Whitchurch), Ross Fisher (Wentworth), Noel Fox (Portmarnock), James Heath (Coombe Wood), David Inglis (Glencorse), Gary Lockerbie (Penrith), Gareth Maybin (Ballyclare), Andrew McArthur (Windyhill), Brian McElhinney (North West), Jamie McLeary (Leven GS), Jamie Moul (Stoke by Nayland), Sam Osborne (Wentworth), Mark O’Sullivan (Galway), David Price (Vale of Glamorgan), Matthew Richardson (Pinner Hill), Michael Skelton (Middlesbrough), Alex Smith (Pyle & Kenfig), Craig Smith (St Mellons), Richard Walker (Frodsham), Stuart Wilson (Forfar), Gary Wolstenholme (Kilworth Springs), Gareth Wright (West Linton).
