Introducing Co Clare. - 16th Jan 2003
County Clare is one of Ireland's premier holiday counties and is home to 10 golf courses.
The Cliffs of Moher, standing "mighty and defiant" against the fierce Atlantic ocean on the county's west coast, are one of the most celebrated features of the Irish coastline. Plunging 200m into the sea and stretching for five miles, these magnificent natural monuments are home to puffins, cormorants and rare fossils.
The Burren, in the north of the county, is another not to be missed natural wonder. It is a unique limestone plateau spanning one hundred square miles. The area takes its name from the Gaelic "boireann" which means rocky land.
Few trees manage to grow in this desolate place, yet other plants thrive.
The Burren is a unique botanical environment in which Mediterranean and alpine plants rare to Ireland grow side by side.
From May to August, an amazing array of flowers creates bright splashes of colour in this otherwise austere landscape.
Bunratty Castle, in the south of the county, was built in 1425 and is the most complete and authentic medieval castle in Ireland. By night, the castle is home to sumptuous banquets.
