The History of Esker Hills Golf Club. - 6th Sep 2004
More than 10,000 years ago, the unique landscape of Offaly was powerfully sculpted by the awesome natural forces of the dying Ice Age. As the great glaciers retreated, their progress across the country left in its wake the narrow ridges of sand and gravel deposited by the streams of water that had once flowed in tunnels beneath the melting glaciers. These ridges now comprise the majestic Esker Riada.
Research has shown that a nine hole golf course existed for a number of years from 1885 adjacent to the present 16th tee. The revival of golf in this ideal natural location was the brainchild of the Molloy and O' Brien families who own these lands.
Christy O' Connor Jnr commenced his design work in 1994 and working with Tom Bryan as main contractor, he has, with minimum soil disturbance plotted a marvelous course through natures own sandhills and sweeping valleys.
Following its opening for play in 1996 Esker Hills Golf Club was affiliated to the Golfing Union of Ireland and the Irish Ladies Golfing Union in 1997. We hope you enjoy your game at Esker Hills and visit again soon.
