OXFORD GOLF CLUB - SOUTHFIELD GOLF CLUB OXFORDSHIRE - 14th Dec 2004
The Golf Course at the Southfield Estate was established in the early 1920's when Oxford City Golf Club moved there together with Oxford University Golf Club. The famous course designer, Harry Colt, had constructed a new course incorporating some holes of the original James Braid Layout.
The undulating parkland course with many fine mature trees and an abundance of wildlife will provide the visitor with an excellent test of golf in beautiful surroundings. Take time to look back from the 4th tee at the splendid view over the City of Oxford's "dreaming spires". Magdalen's four pinnacled Tower, the University Church Spire and the Dome of the Radcliffe Camera are silhouetted on the skyline.
Then on to the 5th where the headquarters of the Old Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, now denuded of battlements and castellations, are on your right.
The back nine features one of Henry Longhurst's (the reknowned TV commentator and former University golfer) favourite Par 3's - the 208 yard 12th which Henry thought to be "...one of the best holes in English golf".
Then on over Lye valley at the 13th (requiring a well struck drive) and on inwards over the challenging Par 4 16th and tricky short 17th to finish at the welcoming Par 5 18th (only 476 yards) which offers the longer hitter a closing birdie (or Eagle!) chance - if the wind does not put the green out of range!
We hope you will enjoy the bon homie of the 19th and a meal in the Southfield restuarant before departing. As you leave, a glance at the photographs in the foyer will take you back to recall some golfing legends from the past - J.H. Taylor of Royal Mid Surrey (one of the 'Great Triumvirate'), a young Henry Cotton, the Whitcombes, Arthur Havers, Alf Padgham 'et al' - taking with you happy memories safely home to return again in the future to share our golfing pride and joy.Southfield!
