Royal Dornoch Golf Club

In 2002 the Club celebrated 125 years since its foundation, but that understates the history of Royal Dornoch by at least a long drive with a jumbo driver.

Centuries before a golf club was formed at Dornoch, the game of golf was recorded as being played in 1616 on the town lands on the links along the seashore.

Links golf, as can be seen from our history, is the original and some would argue the truest form of golf.

Hazards are often natural bunkers where in the past sheep took shelter from the ubiquitous breezes, some would say stiff winds, which ever challenge todays golfers.

As a general rule the lies are "tight" and therefore unhelpful, particularly when trying to play to a hard fast green.

Fairways on which the ball bounces and rolls are something, which have to be imagined and allowed for in one's shot making. There are many possibilities implicit in links golf: fair or unfair depends on your attitude.

It was in 1877 that the Dornoch Golf Club was founded. It was the successor of the Sutherland Golfing Society whose members played at Dornoch and Golspie.

The great Tom Morris came up from St Andrews and laid out 9 proper golf holes. Three years later another 9 holes were added and the fame of the Dornoch course started to spread, even across the Atlantic to America.

In 1906 through the influence of Duchess Millicent of Sutherland the club was granted by King Edward the Seventh as Royal Charter. Royal Dornoch Golf Club was born.

Donald and Alec Ross were both born in St Gilbert Street Dornoch; Donald in 1872 and both learnt their golf on the Dornoch Links. Donald spent some time in St Andrews where from old Tom Morris he learnt the business of club making and green keeping.

He returned to Dornoch as the professional/green keeper. Later Donald and Alec emigrated to America. Donald after a spell at the Oakley Golf Course in Boston joined the Pinehurst complex where he was involved in the creation of Pinehurst No 2.

Royal Dornoch is considered the finest northerly course in the world, and no track offers as delicious a feeling of getting away from it all.

After the second hole of the Championship Course, you round a corner past a hedge and golfing heaven breaks loose. Holes are visible everywhere, the North Sea frames the right, mountains are ahead and hills lie to your left.

At Royal Dornoch on the Championship Course and our second links the Struie, the golfer is presented with a magical mixture in a vision of natural beauty, with respectively 18 holes each of character and challenge that can be recalled to mind long after the round is completed.

Dornoch asks that golfers create shots, play by feel and instinct, and let go of charts and mechanical thinking. The Championship Course can be enjoyed by the average player, but offers repeated and fresh challenge to the expert.
