Caledonian Cottages

The cottages in Glenlivet--next to Blairfindy Castle...

'AMIDST SOME OF THE FINEST GLENS AND WOODLANDS IN THE GRAMPIAN HIGHLANDS, SURROUNDED BY HEATHER COVERED HILLS AND CLEAR RUSHING BURNS, LIES THE BEAUTIFUL GLENLIVET ESTATE'

ACCOMMODATION:

The accommodation available is within two single storey cottages nestling in the shadow of an ancient castle. The cottages provide a comfortable base for your Caledonian holiday. Each cottage is fully furnished and equipped to cater for up to five adults-- 'The Sheiling' (picture here) having one double, one twin and one single bedroom, whilst 'Ardarroch' has one double and one triple bedded room.

Each property has the luxury of central heating and full double glazing, and each has a modern kitchen which includes a full electric oven and hob, a washing machine, tumble dryer, fridge freezer, microwave oven and toaster, plus all the usual cooking utensils.

Both the cottages have a spacious lounge, with the benefit of a colour television and video recorder. At the time of writing this document just four t.v. channels were available (sometimes not very clearly!), a sign that you are truly in the 'wilds' of Scotland!

Each cottage has a well appointed bathroom, offering a w.c., a wash hand basin, and a full size bath with a shower above, however towels are not supplied.

The dining area in 'The Sheiling' is in the large open kitchen, whereas 'Ardarroch' has a separate dining room.

THE SURROUNDING AREA:

Outside, each house is surrounded by ample garden laid mainly to grass, and features a generous driveway for vehicle parking. The hamlet is surrounded by a wood of conifers on two sides, looks out over the hills on another side, whilst the ancient ruined castle sits guard over the cottages.

Peace and quiet are an essential part of the Glenlivet Experience, but there is
an excellent hotel nearby "for that special occasion", and there are also several inns, a doctor's surgery, and a village shop, post office and filling station within an easy car or cycle ride.

The largest community in the area is Inverness, which became a city in the new millennium, and which is the gateway to exploring Loch Ness and the Great Glen. Inverness is about a one hour car journey away.

The nearest "large" shopping centre is elegant Elgin, with its medieval
Cathedral ruins and Cashmere visitor centre, which is about a half hour car journey (25 miles) away

There are smaller towns such as Grantown on Spey, Aberlour and Dufftown all nearer, which offer a more limited range of shopping with a "Scottish Village" feel to them.

Apart from just enjoying the peace and quiet and the stunning landscape, the opportunities within the Grampian and Highland areas for visits and activities seem endless. No matter if the weather is wet or dry there is always something to do (please note some attractions may not be open throughout the year and it's always best to check before setting out if possible).

WHAT IS THERE TO DO:

GOLF - Over 20 golf courses within an hours drive, ranging from seaside links to spectacular mountainside courses and stunning forested heathland courses, many of which are "hidden gems" offering great value for money. Nairn Golf Club, home
of the 1999 Walker Cup, is within easy range.

FISHING- Glenlivet is sandwiched between the Rivers Avon (pronounced "A'AN" locally) and Livet, tributaries of the famous River Spey, and they enjoy a significant reputation for salmon and sea trout fishing. Permits can be obtained at a very reasonable cost. There is also brown trout fishing available locally

WALKING, CYCLING AND HORSE RIDING- Encompassing over 90 square miles of varied countryside and 100 miles of paths and cycle trails, Glenlivet's landscape lends itself beautifully to these outdoor pursuits.

SKIING- Winter snows can last well into Spring, so skiers can make good use of the nearby Lecht Ski Centre, which has one of the best snow records in Scotland.
The Aviemore ski area is also within a reasonable car journey

BIRD WATCHING- The diversity of the countryside gives residence to countless species of birds, including crossbills, siskins, redpolls, goldcrests, snipes, redshanks, curlews, dippers, goosanders, oystercatchers, kestrels, sparrowhawks,
hen harriers and merlins. And don't forget the famous ospreys at nearby Boat of Garten.

GREAT TRAILS- There are a number of routes of special interest to follow in Grampian, such as the Coastal Trail, the Victorian Heritage Trail, Scotland's Castle Trail and, of course, Scotland's unique Malt Whisky Trail.

SPEYSIDE HEATHER CENTRE- Combines a Heather Heritage visitor centre, an Antiques/Collectibles Gallery, a Heather and Garden Information trail, a Craft Shop and a "Clootie Dumpling" restaurant which serves dumplings in 21 different ways!

BAXTERS HIGHLAND VILLAGE- A fascinating day out at the home of this famous Scottish company, where you can learn the Baxter story, visit the Old Museum Shop, attend culinary demonstrations and tastings, dine in unique resaurants and shop in speciality shops. There is also Baxters for kids…..

STRATHSPEY STEAM RAILWAY- For those who can't resist the lure of romantic steam, visit this fascinating railway and take a ride into the past between Boat of Garten and Aviemore.

MONARCH OF THE GLEN COUNTRY- Is not very far away. Why not take a day out and drive to Loch Laggan (about 50 miles away) to view "GLENBOGLE
CASTLE" from across the loch. You will pass through various familiar locations on the way.

ALL THIS AND SO MUCH MORE- Why not give it a try?...
