The Kilfinan Hotel
The Kilfinan Hotel, situated on the beautiful 6,000 acre Kilfinan Estate on the Cowal peninsula in Argyll, Scotland, has been welcoming travellers since before the 18th Century.
The spectacular Highland scenery on the eastern shores of Loch Fyne and the peaceful, unhurried lifestyle of the area make it a perfect all year retreat.
The hotel has 11 bedrooms, all centrally heated, with en-suite bathroom, colour TV and direct dial telephone.
All public rooms are beautifully finished. Cosy and comfortable with blazing log fires.
Good walking country begins at the hotel door. Short walks to Kilfinan Bay or long hikes on the hills - both provide rewarding wildlife sightings and spectacular views.
Fishing of every variety is nearby, from Salmon and Trout on Kilfinan Burn to sea angling on Loch Fyne.
At Kilfinan, you will find plenty to do during your visit...
What delights most people on their first visit to the Cowal peninsula in Argyll is the peace and beauty of the place. There are no noisy motorways, or even dual carriageways to rush along - in fact, many of the roads are empty single-track with ample passing places.
The scenery is magnificent - with mountains and lochs, sea-lochs and islands. Looking down on the Kyles of Bute from above Tighnabrualch is quite breathtaking. In the clear northern air mountain ranges many miles away are easily seen, while the evenings can bring sunsets of unsurpassed beauty.
The Parish of Kilfinan has an ancient history. " Kil " is the Gaelic word for " church " and Finan was a monk from Iona, who established his church around 650 A.D. The present church, which is next door to the Kilfinan Hotel, was built in 1759 on the same site as Finan's. It has a burial vault for the Clan Lamont, containing ancient stones. Local place names show the existence of Norse inhabitants and there are many relics going back to the Stone Age.
Why not try the new Portavadie to Tarbert ferry across Loch Fyne, allowing easy access to the Kintyre Peninsula and links to the ferry departing from Kennacraig to Islay and Jura.
WALKS Apart from a stroll down to Kilfinan Bay, there are many forest walks nearby and hills to climb for the more energetic.
BIRD-WATCHING The quiet of Cowal affords ample opportunity for a great variety of birds (native and migratory) to nest and bring up their young. Birds of prey and many types of sea birds are present.
GARDENS The soft, moist air of Argyll is ideal for growing many plants and trees, even subtropical. Within driving distance there are several famous gardens open to the public - The Younger Botanical Gardens and Eckford Rhododendron Garden at Loch Eck, Ardkinglas near the head of Loch Fyne, Crarae and Stonefield in Kintyre.
There are many facilities for sport, 'including:
FISHING The hotel has its own rights for trout and salmon fishing and can make arrangements for other waters, as well as sea angling.
GOLF The Kyles of Bute Golf Club (free to guests) is an interesting holiday course and welcomes visitors, who will be enthralled by the magnificent views at every hole. There is also the more testing Cowal course at Dunoon and up to twelve others within driving distance.
SHOOTING The hotel can make arrangements for various types of shooting - game, rough and clay pigeon. Stalking is also available.
YACHTING Tighnabruaich offers fine yachting and moorings, plus an excellent RYA accredited sailing and windsurfing school.
