A privately owned hotel, the Dark Island has achieved acclaim as one of the best hotels in the Highlands and Islands. The Dark Island, centrally located in the Uists, is an easy half hour drive from both Lochboisdale in South Uist and from Lochmaddy in North Uist, and is only ten minutes from Benbecula airport.


Benbecula, or "Beinn na Faoghla' in Gaelic, is the "hill of the fords", the ancient stepping-stone between North and South Uist. It lies at the heart of Scotland's Gaelic culture, an active crofting community, world famous for its wealth of local history, folklore, music and song.


Open all year round, the Dark Island has 42 comfortable bedrooms, ranging from economy to deluxe. All rooms have private facilities with TV, radio, direct dial telephone and hospitality tray. The Dark Island, which is fully licensed and open to non-residents, offers many facilities for guests.

We can offer you a two-centred holiday with our sister hotel, The Borrodale, in South Uist which is only two miles from a round of golf on Askernish machair. Also available are a day sea fishing or fly fishing on over 70 well stocked and accessible lochs. Or you can simply relax on the miles of unspoilt sandy beaches.
