Argyll and the Islands is a large, diverse, rural area in the South West Highlands of Scotland. It contains a number of long mainland peninsulas, several separate island groups, and landscapes that range from mountains and sea lochs, to golden beaches and forests.

There are a number of small towns, some within easy reach of the central belt of Scotland, and some which are remote and less accessible. The area includes 26 inhabited islands, with great variations in size and population.

One thing Argyll and the Islands has plenty of is water. Our coastline is longer than that of France, and many think that we also get more than our share of rain!

However, water makes a big contribution to the way of life in the area. Tourists flock from all over the world to admire our scenic coast, the new industry of aquaculture flourishes in our clean seas, and our distilleries produce some of the finest and most distinctive malt whiskies in Scotland.

Argyll & the Islands is also home to a number of new Information Technology based enterprises. These companies are attracted by the well-educated labour force, good telecommunications infrastructure, and a quality of life that is hard to find in urban areas.
