Clifton House Hotel is an historic landmark in the town of Dolgellau. The 17th century cellars were once the old Merionydd County Gaol and the upper storeys dating from 1820 have in the past been used as a tavern and surgeons house.

Situated at the foot of Cader Idris at the head of the beautiful Mawddach estuary the traditional Welsh market town of Dolgellau with it's solid granite buildings and patchwork of narrow streets provides an ideal base from which to explore and enjoy the beautiful landscapes of Southern Snowdonia.

Mountain bike riders will find themselves especially well positioned to enjoy the renowned nearby Coed-y-Brenin forest and with secure lock up facilities for their bikes will have a great time in the day with peace of mind at night. Why not try a mid week break (Sunday to Thursday). There are substantial savings to be had and it's quieter too.

Today's proprietors, Geoff & Teresa Challenor, have created more convivial surroundings than those for visitors in the 17th century with an informal and relaxed atmosphere that befits the original character of the old house with it's wide oak staircase and sometimes sloping floors.

The hotel was upgraded by the AA Hotel Inspectors to '4 Red Diamond' standard for Guest Accommodation, the only one of that rating in the area. Red Diamond awards recognise the very best ten percent of establishments within the three, four and five diamond rating levels and are selected on the basis of the quality of their bedrooms, bathrooms and public areas.
