HISTORY:

Kilmarnock Arms Hotel - described, in a Great North Scotland Railway guide book 1990, as an "old established Hotel". The Kilmarnock Arms goes back to at least 1888 when a local newspaper reported a dinner in honour of a departing tenant from Braehead farm.

The name Kilmarnock Arms comes from a son of the Earl of Kilmarnock, who in 1724 married into the Errol family of Slains Castle, whose title became that of the eldest son of the Earl of Errol.

For many years a temperance Hotel and incorporating the Post Office, the 'Killie' as it is known locally, has always been advertised as a suitable centre for golfing and seeing such local attractions as Slains Castle and Bullers of Buchan.

In earlier years it also advertised sea bathing, hired bicycles and facilities for fishing and shooting.

GOLF:

It is claimed that golf was played in the village of Cruden Bay as early as 1791. The original course, on the present site, was commissioned by the Great North of Scotland Railway (GNSR) following the expansion of the railways at the end of the 19th century, designed by Old Tom Morris of St Andrews, and opened in 1899.

Cruden Bay offers an internationally famous golfing experience - old fashioned links golf at its best - on one of the best links courses in Scotland, and last year was placed at No 52 in the world by "Golf Magazine".

Cruden Bay Golf Course creates unique challenges demanding the skills of power, placement and fine judgement upon the discerning golfer. Set against a backdrop of subtly contoured greens and magnificent panoramic views, a visit to Cruden Bay Golf Course is a must for any golf enthusiast.
